Land Programs & Hotels

  • See big, bold and genuine Alaska! Follow its scenic highways and famed Alaska Railway into rustic towns and through majestic Denali National Park, visit an Iditarod dog kennel, and view breathtaking, snow-mantled mountains.

    DAY 1

After flying into the Anchorage airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Anchorage for the evening. Spend the remainder of the day at your leisure. Meals are on your own.

    Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive north from Anchorage on the George Parks Highway, which winds through the kind of scenery that defines the Alaskan interior: tundra, soaring mountain peaks, glaciers, forests, wild rivers, and vast expanses primarily inhabited by animals such as moose, grizzlies, foxes and birds.

Upon reaching Talkeetna, whose downtown is a National Historic Site, you will have a short time to explore before boarding an Alaska Railroad train. As you travel by rail the 4.5 hours to Denali, seating is upstairs in the Dome where you will enjoy views from all sides of the railcar and lunch is included downstairs in the dining room. Once you reach Denali, you will be transferred to the Grande Denali Lodge or similar, which perches on the edge of a bluff less than a mile from the entrance to Denali National Park.

Following an enlightening private lecture on Denali, your evening is open for dinner on own.

    Day 3

The day starts with an early breakfast at the lodge and then a 4.5-hour Denali Natural History Tour. Focusing on the rich natural and cultural history of the park, this program includes several interpretive stops and an hour off-bus experience. Begin with a stop to learn about the creation of the Denali Park Road with the film “Across Time and Tundra.”

Next visit Savage Cabin, the original ranger’s cabin, provides a living history into how the cabin was once used and how it continues to be used today.

Finally, you will make a stop at Primrose Ridge to experience a memorable Alaska Native presentation that will enlighten you with how the land has been used for nearly 10,000 years. All along the way your naturalist driver-guide will provide a great introduction to the landscape, geology, and history of Denali National Park and Preserve. Note: Tours are conducted Denali National Park busses.

NOTE: Depending on time and availability, there may be time to upgrade to the Tundra Wilderness Tour. Your Tour Director will be able to provide more information on cost and availability during your program.

Upon returning to the lodge, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, before overnighting at the lodge.

    Day 4

After breakfast at the lodge, you will drive from Denali on the Parks Highway, which (weather permitting) affords magnificent views of Mt. Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. In time, you will visit an Iditarod Sled Dog Kennel and learn about this truly Alaskan competition. NOTE: this is not a ride with the dogs.

Traveling from Anchorage to Nome on the Bering Sea coast, each Iditarod team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover 1,150 miles of Alaska’s most rugged terrain in 10 to 17 days. Add temperatures well below zero, scouring winds, and long hours of darkness, and it is no wonder that the Iditarod is called the last Great Race on Earth.

Continuing on from the kennel, you will journey along the shoreline between the Chugach Mountains and the waters of Turnagain Arm to Girdwood. A box lunch will be provided for the journey.

Upon arriving and checking in to the beautiful Alyeska Resort, the remainder of the day is at your leisure with any meals on your own. You may wish to enjoy a ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska on the aerial tramway for a spectacular view of the surrounding area with its seven glaciers. Or perhaps make an appointment at the outdoor Nordic Spa where you can soak in multiple hot and cool pools, make use of their steam rooms or book a massage (costs not included for tram or Nordic Spa). The resort also has an indoor heated pool and hot tub free of charge and several restaurants on site along with a shuttle that will take you to a small array of eateries off site.

    Day 5

After breakfast at the resort, the morning is at leisure.

After lunch (on own), check out and board your motorcoach for the drive to Whittier. Along the way enjoy a stop at an organization dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife. The center is a home and refuge for many animals; bear, moose, elk, and other wildlife that call Alaska home.

Finally, depart for Whittier on the road that passes through some of America’s most spectacular scenery and holds three scenic designations: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road.

Upon arriving in Whittier, you will embark your ship.

Land Program Details Step by Step

•The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. Program times are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change.

•Itineraries with the up-to-date details will be issued when you are emailed your final cruise documents 21 days prior to sailing. You will then receive a final itinerary from our ground operator with a Welcome Letter upon arrival or at your hotel. Please review the letter and your final itinerary carefully for further amendments.

•The hotels used for your land program will be the hotels listed in this document unless you have been advised otherwise in advance of the land program start date.

•Guests failing to arrive on Day 1 of a scheduled land program will be considered a no-show and their hotel space released.

    Extra Nights

•If you book extra nights through the cruise line, you will be met as per the flight details provided and transferred to your hotel. Check-in is 3:00pm (subject to change). Meals other than breakfast, as well as activities, are on your own until day 2 of the program.

•If you have an early-arriving flight, you may wish to book an extra night as your room will not be ready for occupation until approximately 3:00pm.

•If you book extra nights on your own, transfers are not included.

    Day 1

Fly into Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport. You will be met after luggage claim and transferred to the Marriott Hotel in Anchorage or similar. Check in is 3:00pm. If you prefer an early check-in, you may purchase an extra night so that your room is available when you arrive.

This day is at leisure and meals are on own.

    Meet and Greet and transfers

•Final cruise documents will be emailed 21 days prior to sailing. The local ground agent’s telephone number will be on page 1, if you can’t locate the meet-and-greet representative upon arrival. Be aware that the representative may be assisting others and may not be in sight when you first exit Customs and the luggage claim area.

•Look for someone holding a sign with the cruise line logo and possibly your name. If in doubt, ask the airport staff to direct you to the meeting area for transfers or to page our representative.

•Meet and Greet and transfers are arranged for guests arriving on Day 1 of a land program or for extra nights booked through the cruise line and are arranged based on the flight details received by guests at least 14 days before sailing. Guests arriving independently before the program start date will not have a transfer included.

•If we have not received your flight details or your flights have changed, and the Destination Services Land Team has not been notified, then a transfer cannot be provided, and guests will be responsible for getting to the land program hotel at their own expense. Please immediately contact our Reservations Department for any flight changes before departure.

If you are not notified of any changes before your departure, then you will be staying at the hotels listed in this program.

    HOTELS AND LODGES

The best available hotels and lodges in Alaska are used throughout the land program. They are comfortable and rustic. Guests accustomed to the level of services at an international five-star hotel will find that the same services are not available in Alaska. Due to peak season in Alaska from May through September, it may be difficult to change rooms during the hotel stay as all hotels have very high occupancy. Hotels are subject to change.

If you book additional nights independently of the cruise line, an arrival transfer is not provided. If we do not receive flight details a minimum of 14 days in advance, transfers will not be provided.

    Program Excludes for guests:

•Gratuities for tour director and motor coach driver

    •Personal expenses

    •Any meals not listed above

•Hotel incidentals including mini bar and room service

    ADDITIONAL TOURING

While you are in the Denali area at the beginning of the tour program, your guide will present additional touring programs for sale. These tour options vary from week to week and therefore can’t be pre-purchased. However, your guide will do everything possible to help you secure space. Optional tours cannot be pre-reserved through RSSC.

    BAGGAGE

As your baggage will travel on many different modes of transportation, please choose sturdy cases that have been properly tagged with personal identifications, both inside and out. It is important to keep all valuables and documents on your person. As amenities such as elevators and baggage handling are limited at some locations, we suggest you only carry one bag per person while on the land tour. Alternately, your tour director will collect any pieces that you do not want to take on and off the bus each day and it will be stored on the motor coach in a locked bay. Please pack accordingly and bring any medications and documents with you.

Alternatively, you may wish to contact Luggage Forward to make your own luggage transfer arrangements (at own cost) from your home to the ship - www.luggageforward.com

    Phone: 877-231-5131

    CLOTHING AND CLIMATE

With a broad variety of weather possibilities, we encourage you to bring clothes that are suited to layering. Daytime attire in Alaska is strictly casual. Comfortable, supportive walking shoes are a must. The following items should be included: water-repellant coat or jacket, collapsible umbrella, rain hat, lightweight windbreaker, and sweaters. It could be warmer inland with summer temperatures in Denali reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

    ALTITUDE

Travel in Alaska is generally at lower elevations. The maximum altitude is 2,800 feet in Denali National Park.

    WEATHER CONDITIONS

Weather conditions are unpredictable. While the cruise line and its appointed ground operators will do everything possible to assist with alternative arrangements, we cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred if a land program, tour or private arrangement made through the cruise line is disrupted due to adverse weather.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

The published itinerary is based on component suppliers expected to be operating for the land program. Changes to the availability of flights, flight and tour schedules or other itinerary components out of the cruise line’s control may require an adjustment to the final itinerary. The local ground operator will handle meal vouchers, train tickets, or tour tickets included in the program. The cruise line reserves the right to substitute hotels, if necessary.

Please note: Land programs that encompass multiple days ashore customarily include extensive and prolonged activity, while those of shorter durations typically have more moderate activity levels. However, each program varies, and participants should be prepared to negotiate a mixture of surfaces which may include inclines, cobblestones, sand, and gravel or natural paths. There may also be a need to climb steps or stairs on occasion. Guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are advised to check with the cruise line in advance to see if any portion of the tour program may not be considered suitable for their individual situation. • Experience the true Alaska by traveling through the pristine countryside by rail, driving through Denali National Park, and exploring intriguing inland cities, often on your own so you’re free to see whatever you wish. This program features Denali National Park, antique automobiles, sled dog champions, and up close wildlife viewing opportunities.

*This program begins in Fairbanks, Alaska therefore all flights must arrive into Fairbanks International Airport (FAI)

    Day 1

Upon arriving at the Fairbanks Airport, you will be met and transferred to Pikes Waterfront Lodge or similar in Fairbanks. The remainder of the day and evening are free, allowing you to settle in and relax. Meals are on your own.

    Day 2

After breakfast at the lodge, you will begin touring Fairbanks, where you will learn of its rich Gold Rush history.

A stop will be made at Trail Breaker Kennels to meet the canine athletes that run some of the biggest dog sled races in the world. Located along the Chena River in Fairbanks, Alaska, Trail Breaker Kennel was established in 1980 by the husband and wife team of David Monson (Yukon Quest champion) and Susan Butcher (four-time Iditarod champion). Both were avid mushers and longed to fulfill their dream of mushing full-time and raising a family. In 1993, David and Susan decided to share their love of sled dogs with the public.

Trail Breaker Kennel is now one of the longest operating kennels in Fairbanks where visitors experience and enjoy an Alaskan mushing lifestyle. During the winter months, the Alaskan huskies train for and participate in sled dog races around Alaska. In the summer, the dogs take a break from racing and enjoy short training runs around the lake, swimming in the river, and interacting with visitors from around the world.

Following an included lunch at a restaurant in Fairbanks, you will get to spend time this afternoon at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Collection. This hidden gem rivals most collections found around the world and displays American-made antique automobiles and vintage clothing from Alaska’s post-Gold Rush era. Highlights include early steam, electric and hybrid cars, America’s first V16-powered automobile, and midget racecars. All automobiles in this collection are operational.

Later in the afternoon, the lodge will host an exclusive reception so you can get to know your travel companions. The evening is open for dinner on your own.

    Day 3

Breakfast is served at the Lodge this morning before departing on a scenic motor coach journey from Fairbanks to Denali National Park.

By early afternoon you arrive in time for the Denali Natural History Tour.

Tours are conducted in Denali National park school busses.

NOTE: Depending on availability, guests may be able to upgrade to the longer tour into the park. Your Tour Director will be able to provide more information while you are on your tour.

After checking in at the Grand Denali Lodge or similar for the evening, the evening is free for dinner on your own and other activities.

    DAY 4

After breakfast at the lodge, the remainder of the morning is open for optional activities, such as helicopter flightseeing over Mt. Denali, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting on the Nenana River. The prices for each activity vary. These programs can only be booked at the lodge and are independently operated with no affiliation to the cruise line.

Early this afternoon, board a Deluxe Dome Railcar for the journey to Talkeetna. The inspiration for the 1990s TV program “Northern Exposure,” Talkeetna nestles at the confluence of three rivers: the Talkeetna, Chulitna, and Susitna. Seating on the railcar is upstairs in the dome, which offers incredible views of Alaska’s stunning natural beauty from all sides of the railcar. Lunch is included downstairs in the dining room.

The remainder of the day will be free to explore the town, which is known for its restaurants, brewery and small shops. Weather permitting, Talkeetna also offers extraordinary views of Mt. Denali. The highest peak in North America, Mt. Denali can usually be photographed from several locales around town, including the back deck of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge or similar, where you will spend the evening. Dinner is on your own.

    Day 5

After breakfast at the lodge, you will drive farther south to Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage. A brief orientation tour will present some of the highlights and suggestions for lunch on your own in the downtown. Then, it’s on to Whittier, passing through a landscape so spectacular it holds three scenic designations: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road. Make a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see indigenous animals to Alaska in their natural habitat.

Upon arriving in Whittier, you will embark the ship to begin your cruise.

Upon leaving Vancouver, you will take a scenic ferry ride from the Vancouver mainland through the Gulf Islands to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. Upon arrival on the island, you will visit the internationally renowned Butchart Gardens. This National Historic Site began with an exhausted limestone quarry that was transformed into the now picturesque Sunken Garden. Today the garden showcases 55 acres of themed garden displays, including a Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and Rose Garden. Enjoy High Tea at the Butchart Gardens. High tea includes a selection of items including trifle, scones, savory sandwiches and delicacies, homemade sweets and a selection of teas.

From here, drive to Victoria’s downtown area which features the Inner Harbor, The Fairmont Empress Hotel, Mile 0 and historic Chinatown. There will be free time to explore downtown Victoria at your own pace. Wind down the day with the scenic return sail aboard BC Ferries and then return by luxury coach to your hotel. The evening is at your leisure with dinner on own.

    Option 2: Wonders of Whistler

Escape the city and emerge in the wilderness nestled against Vancouver. Journey via luxury coach the Sea to Sky Highway, alongside a coastal fjord and the rugged Coast Mountain Range. Stop along the way to ride the Sea to Sky gondola and ascend 850 meters (930 yards) to the top to soak up the panoramic perspectives of Howe Sound cradled by the Coast Mountains. It’s here that you can cross the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge and walk along forest trails to the observation platforms. The tour then continues north to Whistler Resort.

Upon arrival in Whistler, visit the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre (SLCC). Following the tour of SLCC and lunch, join a short, guided walking tour of Whistler Village (optional). After learning a bit about Whistler and getting a lay of the land, there is plenty of free time to explore at our own pace. Visit the shops, stop in an art gallery, or do as the locals do and find the perfect patio along the village stroll for a moment to relax at this stunning mountain resort. When your time in Whistler is coming to a close, re-board the bus and enjoy the scenic drive back along the Sea to Sky Highway to where your tour began. Enjoy an evening at leisure with dinner on own. Lunch is included at the Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre.

    DAY 3

Boxed lunches will be served following the tour and the journey will continue to Seattle.

In Seattle, drive around the city to catch glimpse of some of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. Each one tells a different part of the story of how Seattle went from a Wild West hub to the metropolis it is today. NOTE: This program ends in Calgary, Alberta. Departing flights must be made from Calgary International Airport (YYC). For guests wishing to book extra nights after the program ends, they must be booked independently as Rocky Mountaineer is not able to confirm them.

NOTE: Please use this itinerary for suggested timings as they may change. Your Tour Director will be able to advise of any changes along the way.

    DAY 1

After disembarking your ship in Vancouver, you will meet your Rocky Mountaineer Tour Director in the Cruise Terminal.

You will be assisted to your hotel for check-in. The hotel is located directly above the cruise terminal.

The hotel’s official check-in time is at 4:00pm. Should your room not be available when you arrive, luggage can be stored with the Concierge so you can hit the streets and explore the city of Vancouver on a whim. There are so many amazing things to do in the city from shopping, to museums, to eateries, there’s historic Gastown, the Vancouver Lookout or perhaps experience Fly Over Canada – an attraction located at the Waterfront. Perhaps hop on a seaplane and take a trip over to Vancouver Island for the day to explore Victoria or check with the concierge on bus times to the mountains and Whistler. The possibilities are endless.

Meals are on your own today.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at your hotel, you will enjoy an exclusive Regent Seven Seas Group half day tour seeing the city’s most popular sites with a driver-guide. Along the way you will visit Granville Island, Gastown and Stanley Park.

After returning to your hotel in mid-afternoon, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.

Lunch and dinner are on your own.

    DAY 3

Following an early morning shared motor coach transfer to the Cottrell Street Station, you will board the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer train. Breakfast will be served onboard shortly after departure.

The Rocky Mountaineer will head north and east through the majestic Canadian Rockies to your overnight destination of Kamloops. On today’s journey you will see dramatic changes in scenery, from the lush green fields of the Fraser Valley, through forests and winding river canyons surrounded by the peaks of the Coast and Cascade Mountains, to the desert-like environment of the BC Interior. Highlights include the rushing waters of Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon and the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River.

On arrival at the Kamloops station, you will be transferred by shared motor coach to your overnight accommodation (the exact hotel will be confirmed by Rocky Mountaineer approximately 7 days prior to departure and are subject to adjustment). The evening is at leisure and dinner is on your own.

    DAY 4

You will re-board the Rocky Mountaineer, enjoy breakfast on board and continue eastwards to the mighty Canadian Rockies and the province of Alberta. Highlights include passing by Craigellachie where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven in 1885, the climb over Rogers Pass, the Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels – a true engineering feat, and the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies.

Your rail journey concludes in the town of Banff. Here you will board a shared motor coach and transfer to the Rimrock Resort (or similar hotel). Note that rooms will have two queen beds.

    Dinner is on your own.

Note: A complimentary shuttle stops at the Rim Rock Hotel which can take you on the short drive into the town of Banff. Here you will find an array of restaurants and unique shopping opportunities. Shuttle schedules are available at the hotel’s Reception or Concierge Desks.

    DAY 5

Following breakfast at your hotel, set out for an awe-inspiring full-day sightseeing tour along the magnificent Icefields Parkway. Among the highlights today are Lake Louise, Emerald Lake and Moraine Lake.

Both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are stunning turquoise lakes located within Alberta’s Banff National Park. These lakes are glacially fed and when light hits the lake it is refracted by the rock flour in the water displaying a distinctive azure-blue color. Photo stops will be made at both.

Enjoy lunch at Emerald Lake Lodge which is located on a private island in Alberta's Yoho National Park. Enjoy breathtaking views over the lake during your visit here.

After this fun-filled day you will return to Banff where the remainder of the day and evening are at your leisure. Dinner is on your own.

    DAY 6

After breakfast at leisure at your hotel, you will enjoy an exclusive Regent Seven Seas Group full-day tour with a driver-guide en-route to Calgary.

This highlights tour includes Bow Falls, Surprise Corner and the Hoodoos in the Banff area. Also take a ride on the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain where you will experience a stunning bird's-eye view of six incredible mountain ranges.

In time, you will check in at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel or similar in Calgary for the evening.

    DAY 7

Following breakfast at leisure, you will check out and transfer by pre-paid taxi to the Calgary Airport based on your flight time. Your tour director will provide you with your transfer details so you can plan your departure accordingly. For guests with late flights after check-out time, luggage storage will be available at the hotel until your transfer.

NOTE: Rocky Mountaineer requires departure flight details at least 3 months in advance. If your flights are not booked through Regent Seven Seas Cruises, kindly make sure that we have these details so that the transfer can be arranged accordingly.

    Land Program Step by Step:

Please note: The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. All program details are subject to change. The timings indicated below are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change. Itineraries with the most up to date details will be issued by the Destination Services Team when you are on board your ship. Please review your final itinerary carefully for any amendments and meeting information. Your Tour Director will provide any further updates along the way if necessary.

Accompanying our exclusive group will be a professional tour director who will handle every aspect of the tour so that you can truly relax and enjoy the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The tour director will check in and out of each hotel on your behalf, ensure your luggage is in the right place at the right time, double check all aspects of the tour are in place, and be available during daylight hours to assist you.
