  • Cruise the shimmering waters of two spectacularly scenic lakes – Como and Maggiore – each with its own charms and history, which you can reflect upon over dinners characteristic of the Lombardy region.

Note: This program begins in Milan, Italy and ends in Civitavecchia, Italy, where guests will embark the ship. Guests will need to fly into Milan (MXP) to begin this program. An economy class internal flight from Milan to Civitavecchia on Day 4 is included in this program and will be booked by RSSC’s air department.

    DAY 1

After arriving at the Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), you will be met in the arrival hall and transferred to your

hotel in Lake Maggiore with an English-speaking guide. Hotel check-in is at 2:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available sooner, this cannot be guaranteed. Transfer time is approximately 1 hour depending on traffic.

As the remainder of the day will be at leisure with meals on your own, you may wish to ask the hospitality desk to suggest activities and restaurants. Perhaps visit the nearby town of Stresa, Lake Maggiore's most well known and widely visited town.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will meet the English-speaking guide in the lobby for a wonderfully scenic drive to Lake Como. Shaped like a large upside-down letter “Y” and surrounded by limestone and granite mountains, the lake is extraordinarily picturesque. It looks even more spectacular from a water perspective as you will discover on a boat cruise to Villa Balbianello. Here you will visit the beautiful gardens and enjoy a traditional lunch at a restaurant overlooking the lake.

Next visit the village of Bellagio, perhaps the lake’s most renowned resort town. The setting couldn’t be more photogenic as Bellagio blankets the shore at the confluence of two arms of the lake. Take your time, take in the views and reflect on the natural beauty.

Once you return to your hotel in Lake Maggiore, the remainder of the afternoon will be at your leisure, leaving you time to relax before transferring a local restaurant for dinner.

Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

    DAY 3

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide for a tour of Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands.

The small Borromean archipelago – which includes islets and larger islands – lies on the far side of the lake. You will reach them on a leisurely boat ride. The islands take their name from the Borromeo family, which has owned them for centuries. Long a resort destination for nobility, the islands have also inspired the likes of writers such as Ernest Hemingway, who set the final chapters of his book “A Farewell to Arms” there. Visit the Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella and have some free time to explore.

Continue by boat to Isola dei Pescatori where you will have a typical lunch.

Following the cruise, you will return to your hotel to spend the remainder of the day as you please. Your only commitment will be dinner at a local restaurant, a fine way to end yet another fulfilling day.

    DAY 4

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the Milan Malpensa Airport with an English-speaking guide, who will offer assistance until you fly off to Rome. There you will transfer to the cruise ship in Civitavecchia.

If any flight delays are encountered while enroute, guests should proceed to the airline counter for updates. • Marvel at the true icons of Rome, including the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the gardens of the Pope’s summer residence, often enjoying private access to areas off-limits to the general public.

Note: This tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter due to the amount of walking, steps, cobbled surfaces and lack of elevators at some sites.

The below represents a sample itinerary. Should a site be closed on a particular day, your itinerary will be amended accordingly so that all sites are seen. Final cruise documents received 21 days before sailing will include the most up to date itinerary for your particular voyage.

    DAY 1

Upon exiting Customs in the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, you will be met and transferred to the Millenium Grand Hotel Palace. This 5-star boutique hotel enjoys a privileged city center location, on via Veneto, the Dolce Vita street. It features marble floors, chandeliers made of Murano crystal, and stunning frescoes by Venetian artist Guido Cadorin.

Check in is at 3:00pm, and the rest of the day is yours to settle in at your leisure. Meals are on your own today.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will tour the Vatican Museums and Saint Peter’s Basilica. The museums contain some of the world’s greatest paintings and sculptures, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Caravaggio. Besides seeing the most well-known exhibits like the Sistine Chapel, you will also visit areas usually closed to the general public, including the tomb of Pope Pius XII and the Niccoline Chapel, which features the lives of St. Lawrence and St. Stephen.

Note: When the Niccoline Chapel is not available, we will substitute with a visit to the “private room of the tears and the room of Pope’s vestments.

After the visit you will return back to your hotel.

In the afternoon, meet the group in the lobby and leave the hotel to enjoy a beautiful panoramic drive of the Ancient Rome. Pass by the Colosseum, the Caracalla’s Baths and the Circus Maximus. Then, you will reach Trevi Fountain, theatrically designed by Nicola Salvi; be sure you throw your coin to ensure your return to Roma.

Next, you will walk to the Piazza Navona, a lovely square constructed in the 15th century and lined with cafes and Baroque palaces. Under the Navona’ Square lies the magnificent Stadium of Domitian. The Stadium was commissioned around 80 AD by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome, and was used mostly for athletic contests. After the visit, enjoy some free time to wonder through the colorful open-air market selling all sorts of souvenirs, fruits and local products, then enjoy lunch in a beautiful restaurant overlooking another one of Tivoli’s sights, the beautiful Villa Gregoriana. Drive back to the hotel.

In time, you will return to your hotel where the remainder of the day and dinner are on your own.

After disembarking the ship in Barcelona, you will begin a guided tour of the city. The guide will explain the history of the church and its lengthy ongoing construction during your outside visit.

Continuing, you will begin a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter, passing landmarks such as the La Seu Cathedral and city hall. A more sweeping view of Barcelona awaits you upon reaching Mount Juic hill, where you may pause for photos. Upon returning to the Château l'Hospitalet Wine Resort Beach & Spa, you can relax and savor another extraordinary dinner in the restaurant before retiring for the evening.

    DAY 1

After disembarking the ship in Civitavecchia and meeting the guide, you will depart for Orvieto, one of the most striking and enjoyable hill towns in central Italy. Orvieto sits majestically high above the valley floor atop a huge block of tufo volcanic stone, overlooking the cypress-dotted Umbrian plains. In some ways, it hasn’t changed enormously since becoming a papal stronghold after Clement VII took refuge there when Rome was sacked in 1527.

Orvieto exudes history, especially in the wonderfully preserved, pedestrian-only heart of town. There you will visit the Piazza Duomo and the Orvieto Cathedral, an example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture so impressive that it has become a symbol of the town. More than 100 architects, sculptors, painters, and mosaicists helped built the cathedral, which took almost four centuries to complete.

Free time follows, during which you might walk through the backstreets and browse the shops, especially for handicrafts such as Etruscan-style pottery.

Continuing on, you will transfer to the Fonteverde, an elegant hotel in San Casciano dei Bagni, an ancient village in lush Val d’Orcia, a valley known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. The atmosphere at the hotel – which is built on a mineral spring – is reminiscent of a Tuscan palace. The natural beauty, rolling hills and vineyards of the surrounding Val d’Orcia park couldn’t be more magnificent.

After checking in, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure, with dinner served at the Restaurant Ferdinando I.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast, you will travel into Val D’Orcia, a valley so aesthetically beautiful that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site for exemplifying a Renaissance agricultural landscape. Its vineyards, olive groves, castles and medieval villages are all in perfect harmony there.

You will pause to explore Bagno Vignoni, a village near the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route. The waters in the village have been used since Roman times for thermal purposes. Even today, water said to have healing properties flows into the enormous 16th-century pool in the village’s Piazza delle Sorgenti.

Continuing on, you will drive to San Quirico d'Orcia, another beautiful and charming medieval town in the valley. The historical center of the village is particularly picturesque. The guide will point out and describe the most outstanding attractions, which will likely include churches and chapels. You will have time to grab some lunch on your own.

Afterwards, you will drive through the wine region that produces Brunello di Montaclino, one of Italy’s most renowned red wines. You will have the opportunity to sample this flagship wine in the cellars of Castiglion del Bosco, a winery whose vineyards primarily grow Sangiovese grapes for Brunello di Montaclino.

In time, you will return to the Fonteverde hotel, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast and check out from the hotel, you will drive to Florence for an enlightening guided walk through the historical city center. Highlights include seeing the Santa Maria del Fiore – better known as the Duomo – and the Piazza della Signoria, the political heart of Florence since the Middle Ages.

The massive Palazzo Vecchio with its high fortress-like walls dominates the piazza. There you can see a copy of Michelangelo’s ‘David’. You will also have time to meander about Santa Croce Square and snap photos of the Ponte Vecchio, the 14th-century bridge that spans the River Arno. During free time, you might stop for lunch and browse the shops.

In the mid-afternoon, you will drive toward Livorno, where you will join the ship.
