Although damaged during World War II, much of the Old Town remains, the reason that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site. You can expect to see the medieval Holsten Gate that became a symbol of the city, the magnificent town hall and the Buddenbrook House, where the famed authors Heinrich and Thomas Mann lived.
