  • Explore the wilds of the Argentine Patagonia by ascending Mount Frias in a 4x4 vehicle and enjoying the wonders Los Glaciares National Park with the opportunity to cruise up to Perito Moreno Glacier.

Special Note: Due to the adventurous nature of this program and the amount of walking over uneven terrain, we do not recommend it for guests with walking difficulties of for those who use a wheelchair or scooter. Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read the airline stipulations below with regards to bringing this equipment on the tour.

    DAY 1

Once you fly into the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, you will be met near the luggage claim area and transferred to the Emperador Buenos Aires for the night.

Check in is 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have the rooms available earlier, this cannot be guaranteed. If your flight arrives early in the day, you may wish to book an extra night to guarantee immediate check-in.

The remainder of the day and evening will be at your leisure with all meals on your own.

Note: Guests failing to arrive on Day 1 of the land program will be considered no-shows and their hotel space released.

    DAY 2

After breakfast, transfer to the domestic airport for a flight to El Calafate. Any excess luggage will be kept at the hotel in Buenos Aires and transferred to the ship so be sure to pack accordingly.

When your flight lands in El Calafate, you will transfer to the 4-star Xelena Hotel in El Calafate. Located in the southwestern tip of the Argentine Patagonia, the town is known for its easy access to the Los Glaciares National Park, home of the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier and hundreds of others.

After lunch on own, set off on a true 4×4 expedition with a skilled driver where you will access the most remote places of Deep Patagonia. Leaving from El Calafate drive to the south and reach panoramic points from which you will contemplate the immensity of the landscape. In view are the Verlika and Baguales hills that mark the southern limit with Chile.

Fossilized oyster reefs, unexplored chenques (Tehuelches burial sites), various native flora and fauna are some of the natural riches that you will see along the way.

Finally, arrive at Estancia 25 de Mayo – an authentic Patagonian house located 800 meters above sea level. Here, enjoy dinner before returning to the Xelena Hotel for the evening.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to Los Glaciares National Park, an expansive protected area covered by an ice mantle. After reaching the Patagonic Andean forest, you will pause for photos at the Curve of Sighs, a lookout where you will have the first view of the Perito Moreno Glacier rising majestically above the landscape.

Next proceed to the "Bajo de las Sombras" port located 7km from the glacier catwalks. Once there, board a large catamaran style boat to navigate the Lago Rico where you will be able to appreciate the amazing walls of the Perito Moreno Glacier, its icebergs and its continuous and thunderous collapses over the Lago Rico. One stop is made approximately 300 meters (984 feet) from the southern wall of the glacier, to take a closer look at the landscape.

Return to the National Park for lunch at one of its restaurants. After lunch approach the glacier by walking down catwalks that will present several other panoramic viewpoints of this wonderful creation of Mother Nature. Chances are, you will see and hear large chunks of ice calving from the glacier and thundering into the water of Lago Argentino. It will be an experience that you will not soon forget.

After this day which is sure to amaze, all guests will return to the hotel, where dinner will be served.

    DAY 4

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the airport for the flight back to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival, you will transfer to the pier for embarkation. If time permits, you will first enjoy a tour highlighting the city’s major neighborhoods and attractions.

Points of interest include the main square Plaza de Mayo, which is surrounded by the Casa Rosada presidential headquarters, the colonial town hall and the cathedral. You may also drive to Caminito and see the colorful tin houses of La Boca and proceed through the elegant Barrio Norte on the way to the Recoleta Cemetery, an above-ground cemetery lined with mausoleums and statues.

•The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. Program times are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change.

    Expected Weather

Seasons in South America are exactly opposite of those in North America. Rain can fall any time of the year. In Buenos Aires, a hot and humid climate should be expected during the summer (December-March). The average high in the summer is 90F/32C and the average low is 65F/18C.

The climate in El Calafate is primarily dry and its extremes of cold and heat are moderated by the influence of Lake Argentino. In summer the weather is dry, sunny, cool and windy; the average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius (68°Fahrenheit), but it can reach a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius (86°Fahrenheit). Minimum temperatures can fall to 10ºC (50°F).

    What to Bring

Light, loose clothing, good hiking boots or shoes and a warm jacket for cooler temperatures at El Calafate. Bring mosquito repellant as well.

    Currency

The official Argentine currency is the peso. U.S. dollars are accepted in most places. In Brazil the currency is the Brazilian real

    Electricity

220 volts A.C. (50 Hz). We recommend bringing your own travel adaptor if required.

    Luggage

The luggage weight restrictions on domestic flights are:

    5kg/11lbs for carry-on luggage

    15kg / 33lbs for checked-in luggage

Fees for excess or overweight luggage will be the responsibility of each guest and payable upon check in for flights.

Excess luggage will be stored at the hotel in Buenos Aires and brought to the ship for embarkation. Don’t forget to bring medications, valuables and documents with you.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

    1. Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry this equipment with them on their flights.

    2. The certificate should have attached a picture of the equipment with its description/specifications especially with regards to the type of batteries used (lithium/dry or any other type).

    3. These documents need to be sent to the Land Program Team via Reservations at RSSC at least one month prior to travel so that our local operator can begin the notification process with the airline(s).

    4. Failure to comply with the above regulations may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which the cruise line nor our local ground operator be responsible for.

    Documents and Visa Requirements:

A passport that is valid at least 6 months after travel is required

Please check with your local embassy for any visa requirements for your nationality.

VERY IMPORTANT – The name on your cruise booking, passport and any visas if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase, otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name. Manifests generated by the cruise line must match your travel documents.

Failure to have the required documents ahead of time or incorrect names on flight tickets will result in either denial of travel or ticket re-purchase and guests will be responsible for any fees incurred.

    Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will spend the day at a traditional estancia ranch in the countryside, a beautiful land that is home to the gaucho. The owners will be your hosts, and during your stay they will regale you with stories about the differences between modern country life and country life years ago.

Lunch will be a hearty asado of grilled meats with empanadas, accompanied by excellent Argentinean wines.

The entertainment will be just as outstanding. You will enjoy folk songs and dances, equestrian activities and an extraordinary demonstration of traditional gaucho skills, such as ring races and horse races and games.

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will begin a half-day sightseeing tour of Buenos Aires, starting in the neighborhood La Boca, where you will view El Caminito, a street that is an open-air museum of sorts full of brightly colored buildings. Some claim the tango originated here around 1870, and tango dancers are often seen performing impromptu in the streets.

Continuing, you will pass the city hall and Metropolitan Cathedral, which is adorned with frescoes and elaborate artwork. You will also see Casa Rosado, the executive mansion. President Juan Peron and his wife Eva, more affectionately known as Evita, delivered numerous speeches from the balcony.

A snack at Café Tortoni follows. This historic cafe has served as the artistic and intellectual capital of Buenos Aires since 1858, hosting notable guests such as Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges. Founded in 1858, the café is the oldest coffee shop in the country.

After touring the city, you will return to your hotel for lunch on own.

Your evening will be spent watching an authentic tango performance over dinner. Although the exact origin of the tango is unclear, there is no denying that the sultry dance is mesmerizing. The rhythmic music and mournful lyrics are just as alluring, as they often tell a story of lust, betrayal and loneliness. You don’t have to speak the language to feel the passion of tango.

After the tango performance, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

Depending on your flight time, lunch will either be at a restaurant or a box lunch will be provided before your transfer to the Iguazú Airport. Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

    DAY 1

After flying into the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, you will be met near the luggage claim area and transferred to your hotel for the night.

The day and evening will be at leisure with all meals on your own.

Check in at the hotel is 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available earlier, this cannot be guaranteed. If your flight arrives early in the day, you may wish to book an extra night to guarantee immediate check-in.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the domestic airport for the flight to Iguazu. Excess luggage will be stored at the hotel in Buenos Aires where you will be reunited with it on Day 4. Don’t forget to bring medications, valuables and documents with you.

After flying into the Iguazu airport on the Argentine side of the falls, transfer to the Argentinian side of Iguazu National Park where you will board an eco-train and ride to Devil’s Throat. This monumental natural wonder is where one of the Iguazu River’s widest parts roars over a high cliff and crashes down into a misty pool below. Rainbows are almost always visible in the mist.

Following lunch in the national park, you will travel along the catwalks of the upper and lower circuits, which will present different perspectives of Devil’s Throat.

Later in the day, you will transfer to your hotel on the Brazilian side of the National Park for check in and dinner.

NOTE: When crossing the border between Argentina and Brazil, changing vehicles will be required due to border-crossing regulations. There may be a wait at the border depending on how many others are crossing at the same time.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the Iguazu Falls National Park on the Brazilian side where you will see Devil’s Throat from a different perspective.

Following lunch at the Belmond Das Cataratas Restaurant, enjoy a motorized boat cruise (zodiac adventure ride) which allows you to view the falls from water level and get close enough to feel the spray and energy created by this great mass of falling water. Please note that you may get extremely wet on the zodiacs depending on how close your boat gets to the falls. Along the way, your guide will explain all about the trees, birds, falls and more.

Note: Dry bags are provided for belongings. The zodiac loading area is not accessible to wheelchairs. There are approximately 100 steps down / up to reach the boats with no ramps. The zodiac tour is optional and any guests wishing to remain ashore can do so. There are shaded areas and benches to sit on throughout the park. Guests may wish to carry some dry clothing or bring a bathing suit to change into after this adventure.

In time, you will walk back to the Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas for the evening. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

    DAY 4

Following breakfast at your hotel, check out and proceed to the border to re-enter Argentina.

Once across the border, visit a community of indigenous Guarani people. As you walk the surrounding jungle trails, a member of the community will describe some of the Guarani beliefs and legends. You will also learn how they use medicinal plants to naturally treat illnesses.

In time, you will visit a temple deeper in the jungle and learn about Guarani rituals of initiation and baptism. To enhance your understanding of this special culture, you will also visit homes in the community and see animal traps and traditional crafts made from natural materials.

You will then transfer to the Iguazu airport in Argentina for a return flight to Buenos Aires. A box lunch is provided during the transfer. Upon landing, you will proceed to the hotel where you stayed on Day 1. Guests will be re-united with any stored luggage.

This evening, you will be treated to a dinner and tango show at La Ventana Tango Club or similar venue. You can expect an extravaganza as costumed dancers and singers passionately perform to live tango music in the city where this art form originated.

You will then return to the hotel to spend the evening.

NOTE: When crossing the border between Brazil and Argentina, changing vehicles will be required due to border-crossing regulations. There may be a wait at the border depending on how many others are crossing at the same time. Passports are required at the border crossing.

    DAY 5

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will begin an enlightening tour of Buenos Aires. Highlights along the way will include the presidential palace known as Casa Rosada, the colonial town hall and the neoclassical Cathedral, where the remains of national hero General Jose San Martin lie.

Then, it’s on to the neighborhood La Boca, where you will meander along El Caminito, a street full of expressive brightly colored buildings. You will also pass through the affluent Palermo neighborhood and past the Recoleta Cemetery, which holds thousands of grandiose mausoleums including Eva Peron’s. The driving tour will end at the pier, where you will embark the cruise ship.

  • A delightful introduction to this vibrant and captivating city! Visit its major attractions including Sugar Loaf Mountain and the neo-futuristic building Museu do Amanhã or “(Tomorrow´s Museum)”. The group will also visit a Samba Factory to learn about the process of creating and producing a parade for Rio’s famed Carnival.

    Day 1

Following disembarkation in Rio, meet your guide and take a drive downtown for an intriguing tour of Rio. You will see its beautiful buildings dating from colonial and Imperial days sharing space with the very modern architecture of the Brazilians Oscar Niemeyer, Afonso Reidy and many others. Adding to this group of masters, is the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava who designed the neo-futuristic building Museu do Amanhã, (Tomorrow´s Museum).

Your tour includes visits to the modern Catholic Cathedral, the ancient and gorgeous Saint Bento Monastery as well as The Tomorrow’s Museum. You will also see the Opera House, the Fine Arts Museum and the National Library.

Following your introductory tour of Rio de Janeiro, drive to your hotel and check in. The Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort is the city´s only beachfront resort with an extensive recreational area, spa and amenities. The lush, landscaped grounds are set above a white-sand beach fronting the tropical South Atlantic and flanked by towering mountains. Your hotel is located approximately a 10-minute drive from Ipanema Beach and 20-25 minutes to Copacabana Beach.

After checking in, the remainder of the day is at leisure for you to explore as you wish. Lunch and dinner are on your own. Note that hotel check in time is at 3:00pm and although every effort will be made to have rooms available before this time, this cannot be guaranteed. Guests may store luggage at Reception should your room not be ready immediately upon arrival.

    Day 2

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel before driving to Praia Vermelha. Here, you’ll board a cable car for a ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. The 600-million-year-old granite and quartz mountain was named for its tall cone, supposedly because it resembles sugar that was shaped into a loaf for transport in the 19th century.

The cable-car ride is in two stages. The first takes you to Urca Hill, where there are lush, fragrant gardens and several scenic lookouts. If you wish to venture even higher, the second segment of the cable car ride will take you to the very top of Sugarloaf, which rises 1300 feet above sea level. From here, you will enjoy mesmerizing views of the city, Guanabara Bay, the ocean and smaller, densely vegetated mountains.

After descending Sugarloaf, you will drive through a number of pleasant residential areas and eventually stop for a typical Brazilian BBQ lunch.

Lunch is followed by a drive downtown for a unique backstage visit to a Samba School Pavilion. Here, you will learn about the process of creating and producing a parade for Rio’s famed Carnival. It will be especially fascinating to see how the lavish costumes and floats are made. If you wish, you can try on some of the costumes from last year’s Carnival for a photo.

Following this entertaining visit, board your vehicle for a drive through the Rebouças tunnel and return to the hotel by late afternoon. On arrival, you still have time to relax at the hotel. Dinner is on your own.

    Day 3

After your breakfast buffet the day is yours to explore at your leisure.

Your hotel concierge will be able to assist with sightseeing recommendations or you may wish to purchase in advance a private car and guide for the day through our Executive Collection team.

Lunch and dinner are on your own.

    DAY 1

Disembark the ship in Rio de Janeiro, meet your guide and proceed to the airport for a flight to Iguazu. Excess luggage will be separated before departure on the pier.

Note: Each guest is permitted to fly to Iguazu with one piece of hand luggage up to 10 kg/ 22lb and one checked piece of luggage up to 23 kg/ 50lbs. Any excess luggage will be separated in the morning and stored in Rio where you will be reunited with it on Day 3. Be sure that all stored luggage is sufficiently labeled with your full name and ship suite number. Don’t forget to bring valuables, medications and documents with you. Please pack accordingly prior to disembarking the ship. Excess luggage brought to Iguazu will be subject to fees imposed by the airline and payable at the time of check in.

Upon arrival in Iguazu, you will be met and transferred to the Belmond Das Cataratas Hotel. The hotel is located on the Brazilian side of the falls within Brazil’s Iguazu National Park. With its unrivaled location just a short stroll from the sensational waterfalls, you can enjoy exclusive access to the falls in the evening and at dawn when the park is closed to other visitors.

After lunch at the hotel, you will begin a walking tour of the Brazilian side of Iguazu National Park by descending a trail down the canyon, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of more than 240 falls. You will then board the glass elevator to a platform to enjoy more exquisite views of the cascades.

Along with its sister park in Argentina, the Iguazu National Park forms the most significant remaining rainforest in the southern cone of South America which, along with the waterfalls, UNESCO has declared a National Heritage Site.

Tonight, enjoy a special dinner at Fabio Tavera's House. The former Head Chef of the Das Cataratas Hotel, Fabio is a talented Brazilian chef who for the past 15 years has been traveling all around the country in search of the flavors that bring this vast and exotic land to life. Fabio will guide you through a six-course meal which pays homage to the heritage of natives, Africans and Europeans that forged Brazil’s flavors in 500 years of history and, of course, while the journey goes on, enjoy fine wine pairings with exquisite South American wines. Throughout the night, the chef will closely and interactively explain the origins of the ingredients and tell curiosities about Brazil’s culinary past.

After dinner return to your hotel.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast, you will begin a full-day tour of the Argentine side of the falls.

After departing the hotel, you will cross the Tancredo Neves Bridge, enjoying its lovely view of the Iguazu Canyon and head towards the Argentine side of Iguaçu National Park. At the entrance, a small train will take you on a tour through the park, making two stops: one to the upper circuit and another to the lower circuit.

You will follow the walkways to the top of the waterfalls, which provide spectacular views of the falls set among the abundant nature filled with orchids, colorful birds and other wildlife. The highlight of the trip will be visiting the suspended platform at the very brink of the Garganta do Diabo waterfall (Devil’s Throat), the largest of the waterfalls in the park.

A stop will be made for lunch at the Melia Iguazu Restaurant located inside the hotel Gran Melia on the Argentine side.

Proceed next on a Macuco Safari tour. Set off in open jeep-towed wagons, allowing for an unobscured view of the scenery along the trail. During the three-kilometer (two-mile) stretch through the jungle, guides draw your attention to the flora and fauna of the park, sharing their expert knowledge.

The second stage of the tour is an optional 600-meter (2,000 feet) hike, which leads up to the Macuco Falls waterfall. Tumbling down from a height of approximately 20 meters (65 feet), it’s the perfect spot for a refreshing dip on days of intense heat. Access the falls via a stairway carved into an ancient rock.

Your final stop is the Macuco Safari dock on the Brazilian side of the Iguassu River. The boat then departs upriver, passing through the canyon and along the rapids at a comfortable speed, allowing you to appreciate of the stunning scenery.

After this amazing adventure, return to your hotel to freshen up before dinner.
